Confrontation in Odesa on 2 May 2014

The 2 May 2014 Odesa confrontations were massive riots that took place in the city of Odesa on 2 May 2014. About two thousand people who had gathered to participate in a peaceful march along the main street "For the Unity of Ukraine", where they clashed and started a confrontation with a group of about 300 pro-Russian people who were advocating the idea of "federalisation of Ukraine", which was actively being imposed by the Russian Federation at the time.

After clashes and the death of two pro-European activists (they were shot dead), the rally escalated into a chase of pro-Russian activists to Kulykove Pole, where the remains of their tent city, which had been partially moved by local authorities to the outskirts of Odesa the day before, were located. About 300 supporters of federalisation barricaded themselves in the Trade Union Building. Both sides threw Molotov cocktails at each other, which resulted in a fire inside the building, killing 42 local pro-Russian activists (who were injured and thrown out of the window).
