Donetsk's jewel in the crown - the Donbass Arena is derelict

One of the most famous stadiums in Europe in the early 2010s and the most modern in Ukraine, the Donbass Arena has not hosted a football match for over 8 years. The Russian occupiers have admitted that they see no point in investing and maintaining the stadium.

The Donbass Arena was built in 2009. It seats almost 53,000 spectators and is the home stadium of football club Shakhtar. Since Russia introduced troops into the Donbass in 2014, no matches have been held at the stadium. In eight years of occupation, without proper maintenance, problems began to appear. The arena was subjected to constant shelling during the "hot phase" of the conflict in the summer of 2014: in August, the stadium was shelled and suffered numerous damages due to shells. The football pitch, unique in its structure, has also been neglected. The pitch is overgrown with weeds and the lawn is completely useless. Russia cannot build, this terrorist state is only wreaking havoc and havoc everywhere it goes.
