Donbass Arena and the European Football Championship 2012

In 2012, Donbass Arena welcomed many football fans from all over the world during the EURO 2012 Championship in Donetsk. Since the beginning of the Russian occupation (2014), the stadium has been empty.

On 29 August 2009, the Donbass Arena was opened in the centre of Donetsk - the first stadium in Ukraine and Eastern Europe to meet the UEFA and FIFA elite class standards. The construction of the stadium and the park around it cost about 400 million dollars. The arena could seat more than 52 thousand fans. Shakhtar Donetsk hosted the world's top football clubs, such as Barcelona and Juventus. Euro 2012 matches were held here. Everything changed after the start of the Russian-Ukrainian war and the occupation of Donetsk in 2014. The stadium was shelled several times, and then it was "expropriated" by "DNR" militants.
