At 5:00AM on February 24, 2022, Russian troops invaded the territory of Ukraine and began hostilities. The purpose of the special operation, President Vladimir Putin called the "denazification" of Ukraine and "forced" opposition to Kiev and the West.

The Russian invasion began and continued with air, missile and artillery strikes against military and civilian infrastructure in Ukraine.

Almost immediately, Western countries responded to the invasion with sanctions against Russia.
