Public activist and paratrooper Kostiantyn Vasyuk died on 23 August 2022 in a battle with the Russian occupiers in the southern part of Ukraine. The man turned 58 in June.
Kostiantyn grew up in a Russian-speaking family, studied at a "Russian" school, and graduated from the Higher Military and Political School in what was then Leningrad. But he became a Ukrainian nationalist and patriot. Even before the war broke out, Kostiantyn and his brother set up a successful confectionery business in the small town of Kalynivka, Vinnytsia region. Their sweets under the brand name 'Solodka Khata' were sold in almost half the country. He had a lot to lose. However, the man was first and foremost a patriot and always fought against the arbitrariness of the authorities if he considered their actions to be anti-Ukrainian.
"I am not indifferent to how my people live, what kind of government we have. I am fighting for the state authorities to live in the interests of the people. The main goal for any nationalist is to achieve national and social justice in our country and to build the Ukrainian state," said Konstantin.
In Kalynivka, Vasyuk was known for his active civic position. Since 2008, he headed the city organisation of the All-Ukrainian Union "Svoboda". He took an active part in the Orange Revolution and the Revolution of Dignity. He has always been a patriot and defended the interests of Ukraine.
"For my father, the revolution began long before November 2013. Even before the Orange Revolution, he said that we were different from the Russians and that our war had been going on for centuries," said Kostiantyn's son.
After the Maidan, he became the head of the Kalynivka District State Administration. However, when the Russian-Ukrainian war broke out, he went to defend Ukraine in the Armed Forces. His subordinates applauded him, knowing that their leader was going to defend the country. He served in an engineer battalion and was the battalion's deputy commander for personnel. This unit was building field fortifications in Donetsk and Luhansk regions along the entire frontline.
The man's son, Kostiantyn Vasyuk Jr, was studying at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow at the time. He took a leave of absence and volunteered for the frontline as part of the Carpathian Sich assault company, then the 93rd separate mechanised brigade.
"My father had a military education and came to the front with the rank of senior lieutenant. He was a deputy company commander. In two months, he was promoted to deputy battalion commander. Their unit was building strongholds, dugouts, trenches and fortifications. Our positions were relatively close, so my dad came to visit me from time to time," said Konstantin's son.
According to friends, in civilian life the man was a successful entrepreneur and philanthropist. Kostiantyn Vasyuk was repeatedly elected to the city and district councils. He was a member of the executive committee of the Kalynivka City Council.
With the outbreak of a full-scale war, Konstantin returned to the Armed Forces of Ukraine to drive the enemy from Ukrainian lands again. He served in the airborne assault troops: first in the 95th Brigade, then in the 46th Brigade. He took part in the liberation of Makariv in the Kyiv region. Then he was wounded and contused.
The man spent only two weeks in hospital and then went back to service. As a member of the 46th Air Assault Brigade, Vasyuk went to defend the southern regions of the country. It was there that he fought his last battle. On 23 August 2022, on the Day of the National Flag, Kostiantyn Vasyuk was killed during a tank attack.
Kostiantyn is survived by his wife and three children.
