Since 2014, it has been a frontline town due to the armed conflict in eastern Ukraine. Fighting for Avdiivka resumed intermittently until 2017. The town was heavily damaged during the invasion of Ukraine by Russian occupying forces in 2022.  

On 26 March, phosphorus munitions were fired at Avdiivka's industrial zone[1].
On April 26, the area of the coke plant and the next morning, the city centre, which caused several fires[2]. 
On 29 April, the use of thermobaric ammunition by Russian forces near Avdiivka was reported[3]. 
On 18 May, the Russian army destroyed Avdiivka School No. 1 with phosphorus munitions (there were no casualties; only the duty personnel who managed to escape were inside the building)[4].
